Johnson & Johnson agreed on 24 April to acquire Atraverse Medical, a privately held developer of radiofrequency left-heart access technology, for an undisclosed sum.
Why Johnson & Johnson is buying Atraverse Medical, Inc.
Atraverse's HOTWIRE system pairs a radiofrequency guidewire with a generator to cross into the left atrium during atrial fibrillation ablation, a technically demanding step. Its features include impedance-sensing automatic energy shut-off, compatibility with multiple sheaths and tip visibility under intracardiac echocardiography. The acquisition strengthens J&J's cardiac ablation portfolio.
Deal terms and financing
Financial terms were not disclosed.
Regulatory approvals and timing
The deal was expected to close in the second quarter of 2026, subject to customary conditions. J&J's release was later updated to state that it completed the acquisition in the second quarter of 2026.
Market context
The HOTWIRE guidewire was cleared by the FDA in May 2024 and the integrated generator in December 2025. The device was invented by Steven Mickelsen, a pioneer of pulsed field ablation, with co-founder Eric Sauter; Atraverse raised more than $40m from 2024, according to Medical Economics.
