Novartis agreed on 20 March 2026 to buy Pikavation Therapeutics from Synnovation Therapeutics for US$2bn upfront and up to US$1bn in milestone payments, securing the breast cancer candidate SNV4818.
Why Novartis AG is buying Pikavation Therapeutics (Synnovation Therapeutics)
Novartis said SNV4818 is designed to hit mutated PI3Kα in tumour cells while sparing the normal enzyme, which could improve tolerability and allow combination with hormonal therapy and CDK inhibitors earlier in treatment. About 40% of HR+/HER2- breast cancer patients carry PIK3CA mutations.
“SNV4818 applies new mutant‑selective chemistry to more precisely target tumor biology while sparing normal cells.”
Deal terms and financing
Novartis pays US$2bn in cash upfront plus up to US$1bn tied to development, regulatory and commercial milestones, for total potential consideration of up to US$3bn. Synnovation retains its other research subsidiaries and continues to develop the PARP1 inhibitor SNV1521.
Regulatory approvals and timing
Closing was subject to antitrust review, with completion expected in the first half of 2026. Novartis's half-year report shows the acquisition of Pikavation completed on 28 May 2026 and accounted for as an asset acquisition.
Market context
A week later Novartis agreed to buy US allergy biotech Excellergy for up to US$2bn, part of a run of bolt-on deals as it increases its focus on the United States.
